Is that SO difficult to make it so we could change that name 'legally'? I mean would the sky come down if we were allowed that? Why Why (no answer, go back to my trusty windows and thanking my god I only maintain Macs, not actually use them day to day.) If Apple didn't lock the home user name in finder I would never have to deal with such %^&*. I am not sure if that finder is not single user thing too, not just that command line that I did the stuff at? When you exit from linux prompt it takes you to finder but it is not like your original normal finder, at least when you shut down or restart you see again those linux guts (letters on black screen). I am also confused by this Single user thing (on startup pressing Command-S). You need first 'cd /var/db' change directory and then do 'rm' stuff, I mean linux command line experts don't ask advice here, I for one am not sure in heels and sometimes get stumped by such sloppy advice and who knows about those other lines too, makes you wonder. What gives? Did the setup file got hidden of protected better than it was first time around? Is there better guide?īTW you can't use this line as advised "rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone" Then I repeated exactly what I did that first time but again got complaining and again F all happened. So I went back and when I got linux complaining again I just pressed Enter, rebooted and still %^&*() all, no change! I reboot and there was no change whatever. I relogged straight to single user again and did that but this time around I got linux complaining about it being only read file blah blah blah and if I want to proceed? I types Y and pressed Enter (I know very little of linux, no idea if I should have typed Yes or something else). Then I thought I shouldn't have emptied those preferences, maybe caches but as OS is freshly installed and not much used as it is I don't have to do any deleting except that "rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone" line. I had fresh image made (just prior to this experiment) on external USB drive and I recovered from it back to where I was. That's stupid, it would be easier to reinstall from scratch since then at least you set it up as you are installing.
TYPESY IMAC INSTALL
I'd have to setup whole $%^&* system too, mouse scrolling again upside down as on fresh install etc.

But all programs were totally reset, unregistered, you name it. I filed in my details and when I got to finder I was badly disappointed that all programs were missing from the dock except in upper right the bunch of icons seemed ok as I left them. I followed with deleting cached stuff including the link given here and when I rebooted I got the first logon screen OK. It didn't complain in any way although you don't get any feedback or I don't remember if I had. Then I restarted to single user and also it couldn't find anything to do until I got to "rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone" on this Mac, so maybe its logical I don't have anything to delete. OK I thought maybe that's the Group thing and I don't use that, just single user, not even second acct. To start with while logged in normally I did the deleting of files in Terminal as per the advice I linked to and there were no files to delete, destination didn't exist or something like that. OK I finallllllllllly tested the 'back to welcome screen' and got mixed results.
TYPESY IMAC MAC
but would like to change it depending on the Mac location, so that when you remote access Mac you know which one you are accessing. Reason I ask is I made image of newly installed Lion and pre-installed number of programs and did various configuration and now I want to restore this image to Macs around the house and so I have chosen 'generic' username. On Mac with apps installed and various configurations done (or Mac that has been in use for some time) and return to the Welcome screen, will everything be the same except you will get the chance to change the Username? I suppose the localization can be easily changed in preferences pannel, it is really only the Username you can't change. If not, what else should I include? I suppose I would have to also include the lineĪs suggested by bbarrera to get chance to enter new Username, right?Īnd if you do what firephoto suggests, what happens to installed programs? Will they still be there but with reset preferences or what?Īnd if you do just that one line suggested by bbarrera If I wanted just to remove the Username, the one you can't normally change, would the following line be sufficient?
